Acne Scarring Treatment

Acne scars can be a source of frustration and self-consciousness for many. Our board-certified dermatologists are experts in acne scar treatment and utilize various modalities to help our patients achieve smoother clearer skin.

Using minimally invasive procedures, we can improve the appearance of acne scars to attain the complexion and confidence you desire.

What acne scar treatments are available?

Just as there are powerful acne treatment options to control breakouts, there are effective ways to diminish the uneven texture of acne scars. Many patients will benefit from a multi-pronged approach involving several treatment sessions.

Laser therapy

Lasers use intelligent energy delivery to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. Our practice offers the latest laser treatments, including the Contour TRL, the Halo hybrid fractional laser, and BBL photofacials. BBL laser treatment for acne scars has three times the peak power for faster results. The broad beam light works on a cellular level to resurface scarred and pigmented skin and can produce dramatic results after three to five sessions.

Chemical peels

Chemical exfoliation removes damaged surface skin cells for a smoother, more even-toned complexion. We offer a range of VI Peels and medium depth chemical peels for acne scars that yield improvements in texture and clarity after each treatment. Packed with potent actives, chemical peels also provide anti-aging benefits and may be combined with prescription bleaching compounds to correct pigmentation. In addition, chemical peels may be combined with other acne scar removal treatments for further improvements.

Microneedling

Microneedling triggers collagen and elastin synthesis, which improves depressed acne scars. Genius RF microneedling for acne scars combines radiofrequency with microneedling to target the deeper dermis for faster results. By inducing controlled damage with RF energy, moderate to severe atrophic scars become less visible.

Acne Scarring: Before and After

What are acne scars?

Not every pimple, nodule, or cyst will lead to scarring. Acne scars--both depressed and raised--are caused by trauma to the surrounding tissue and the production of new collagen fibers. Redness and post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH) can often mimic the appearance of acne scars.

However, there are three types of acne scars: ice pick scars, boxcar scars, and rolling scars. Ice pick scars form a deep “V” shape in the skin with a narrow width (< 2 mm). Boxcar scars appear punched out and can be either linear or round with well-defined edges. Rolling scars are depressed with sloping edges that vanish when the skin is stretched.

Whether you have one type of acne scar or multiple varieties, our dermatologists will create a personalized acne scar treatment plan for optimum results.

How long does it take to treat acne scars?

The answer depends on the severity and type of acne scars and the recommended course of treatment. While our dermatologists can improve the appearance of most acne scarring, not all can be permanently removed.
